Dicey

Lessons from a Dog

Sniff. Wiggle. Wag.

How could I forget your joyful wiggling greeting, your happiness in seeing me and in meeting someone new?

Watch. Wonder. Wait.

How could I forget your curiosity, those many hours spent waiting, and watching, and wondering?  And to the flick of your ears, the twitch of your nose, the words:

“So much to be amazed at, so much we don’t know”.

Heel. Sit. Stay.

How could I forget the time we spent training, your skill, your patience, the pleasure you took working, your obedience but also your determination giving 110% of yourself in everything?

Nuzzle. Lick. Listen.

How could I forget those sad days, those very bad days,  the days when the air all around me seemed hung in gloom?  Your nuzzle, your soft eyes and wet muzzle reminding:  “It is alright to be sad, but the world does keep going on.”

Dance. Prance. Shine.

How could I forget your elegance and grace, the way your eyes lit up, the way you nearly glowed?  You knew that you were the center of things while you were in the ring. You seemed so proud of yourself and your ribbons. To you, though, the shiniest part of the trophy was always my Voice whispering into your ear: “Good dog!  God job!”

Jump. Run. Race.

How could I forget your leap into the sky, your races with the breeze, your chasing of the clouds, your paws pounding the rhythm of your joyful bounds, your happiness in simply jumping and running and racing?

Live. Love. Learn.

How could I forget the things you taught me, the way you lived every day absolutely, the way you loved so truly, but most of all I think, the way you learned and through your learning taught me more that you will ever know?
